What is SEO?
Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of affecting the visibility of a website or a web page in a search engine’s ”natural” or un-paid search results In general, the earlier (or higher ranked on the search results page), and more frequently a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine’s users.
SEO has two main disciplines they are as follows:
On Page Optimisation
This is basically tidying up your web site so that Google and the other major search engines can read it and understand exactly what you do. It is important to understand that Google treats each page of your web site as a separate entity and so it is vital that you carry out On Page SEO on every page.
If you could imagine taking the Yellow Pages for every town in the country and then tearing out the index and content pages. Then scatter all the internal pages across the floor and try to find a “Electrician in London”. This is just like the internet with billions of random web pages all over country (and World). Google and other search engines are simply the content and index pages and help you the searcher to quickly find things. Therfore the first thing you need to do is ensure your pages appear in the relevant section of Google’s index.
On Page SEO includes things like adding Keywords and Phrases to the Meta Title, Meta Description, Header Tags, Structuring your Content in the correct way, ensuring you match relevant keywords to the content on your page, accurate keyword selection plus much more.
Again in simplistic terms “On Page Optimisation” typically accounts for about 25% – 30% of what Google is looking for when it decides who goes on page one of their listings.
Off Page Optimisation
This is without doubt the most important factor and is effectively Link Building. If another web site links to you then Google see this as a vote of confidencefor web site. If a web site withing the same or similar industry links to your web site then Google see’s this as a strong and more valuable vote of confidence (relevant link). If a highly valued web site within the same or similar industry links to your site then Google see’s this as an even more valuable vote of confidence (relevant authority links).
The web site (or more accurately web page) with the best. One Page SEO and the most inbound, high quality, relevant links will reach the top of Google.
